Explore Speaker Series: Discoveries under the Mountains

Location: Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre

Thursday, February 21, 2019 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Join us as we launch the first talk of our 2019 Explore Speaker Series with a presentation by Christian Stenner of the Bisaro Cave Project: Discoveries under the Mountains: Modern Cave Exploration in the Rockies

Caves are one of the last unexplored frontiers of our planet. With so much left to discover, amazing breakthroughs are being made right here in Canada, where a golden age of exploration is continuing to this very day. You will hear about some of the modern cave expeditions happening in the mountains right now and some remarkable discoveries. These include discoveries in the Bow Valley and Crowsnest Pass, recent exploration in Canada’s longest cave, Castleguard cave, exploration of an amazing marble cave in Glacier National Park, BC, and remote caves in the subarctic which may be a last stand for bat populations in North America. As well, the presentation will highlight the ongoing efforts of the Bisaro Caves Project, which recently confirmed Bisaro Anima cave north of Fernie, BC as the deepest cave in Canada.

Christian Stenner has been caving for over fifteen years and has served on the Board of the Alberta Speleological Society. Over that time, he has been involved in the exploration of the world’s largest network of volcanic steam caves at the summit of Mt. Rainier, over a kilometer of caves within the crater of Mt. St. Helens, and the deepest cave in the western hemisphere in Mexico. Closer to home, he is involved in caving projects in the Rockies and is a co-leader of the Bisaro Caves Project, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and MEC expedition of the year in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and a Fellow International of the Explorers Club, the society dedicated to human exploration of land, sea, air, and space. He also serves as the Alberta coordinator for the Alberta/BC Cave Rescue Service.

The Explore Speaker Series is a new speaker series hosted by the Canmore Museum. It aims to feature individuals and organizations who have explored new ideas and places in and around our communities. These free talks are hosted on the Third Thursday of the month at the Canmore Civic Centre.
