River rapids and
quiet cruises
Cool waters of a turquoise hue so intense it seems impossible. Vivid
mountain scenery rising in every direction. An abundance of wildlife and
a distinct shortage of other people.
That's what brings people to the Canmore area when they're looking for
fun on the water. Whitewater kayaking enthusiasts will find the
Kananaskis River, only 30 minutes away, an excellent place to play. The
river is the site of several whitewater rodeos throughout the year.
Those who have never tried kayaking
before will enjoy a trip in inflatable kayaks holding one or two people.
These day trips depart from Canmore all summer long, and offer a great
chance to enjoy the river while learning a new skill.
Those who prefer to enjoy whitewater from the more traditional
inflatable raft will find no shortage of thrilling mountain-park trips
on the Kicking Horse River for those who want an adventure involving
Class III and IV rapids. This is all about fun - adrenaline rushes and
spray flying everywhere.
A more interpretive experience can be had on the Bow River, which passes
right through Canmore. Float trips, offered by our members, take
visitors on a calm voyage down the Bow. This trip is a great chance to
enjoy incredible scenery and maybe sight some wildlife. Kids as young as
age three can take part, which makes this trip ideal for the young
family. Our members also offer an introductory whitewater trip on the Kananaskis River, which allows children as young as six to experience
whitewater for the first time.
Within nearby Banff National Park, Lake Minnewanka Boat Tours offer
daily cruises on the lake to Devil's Gap, a scenic landmark. These tours
talk about the history and ecology of the area, all while cruising the
remarkable scenery (and are an excellent chance to see wildlife).
All of these adventures allow the visitor to experience the mountains
from a different vantage point. Moving along on the water gives a
tremendous sense of perspective and appreciation for the magnificence of
the area. |
